Las Posadas

Las Posadas are mainly celebrated in Mexico and Central America during the nine days leading up to Christmas.

Starting December 16th, people reenact the trip. Some dress up in costumes and have a pregnant Mary ride a donkey, while asking for a place to stay (pedir posada) at various houses.

La Navidad Negra

In Ica, Peru, Christmas is black.

Most of the citizens in this city are Afro Peruvians, and to celebrate Christmas, they recreate the birth of Jesus, with black actors.

The Villancicos

When it comes to Christmas carols, we all know a few.

Hispanics though, have a whole orchestra ready to play when it
comes to music in any setting. These are some of the commonly
used ones:

Mi burrito sabanero – My Sabanero Donkey
Campana sobre campana – Bell over Bell
Los peces en el río – The fish in the river
Feliz Navidad – Merry Christmas
Ven a mi casa esta navidad – Come home this Christmas
Navidad sin ti – Christmas without you

(La Misa del gallo)

On December 25, Christmas day, La Misa de Gallo (the rooster mass) takes place in the early morning.

In the Dominican Republic, this celebration takes place in the Catedral Primada de América, the first cathedral on the American continent, where believers congregate on Christmas to celebrate.

Aguinaldo (Christmas bonus)

In several countries around the world, such as Mexico, an Aguinaldo is given to workers in the month of December, this is a tradition in Latin America and is popular in countries such as Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Bolivia, etc.

Every country has its rules and regulations for the Aguinaldo, for example In Bolivia, workers must collect their Aguinaldo before December 25th. For employees it is a month’s salary; for workers, 25 days of salary.

The arrival of the Three Wise Men is celebrated on January 6th. This is another gift-giving occasion for kids and the end of the holiday season.
